What to Prepare Before Your Contractor Arrives (With Printable PDF)
Renovation, hacking, or reinstatement works can move quickly once they start — but delays often happen before the first wall is even touched.
To avoid wasted time, access issues, or MCST rejections, here’s a clear checklist of what to prepare before your contractor arrives on site.
We’ve included a free printable version at the end for easy reference.
Pre-Work Preparation Checklist
1. Secure All Required Approvals
- HDB hacking permit (if applicable)
- MCST renovation approval
- Landlord endorsement for rental properties
Tip: These can take 5–10 working days. Submit early!
2. Provide Floor Plans & Site Access Info
- Send your contractor the latest floor plan
- Highlight areas to hack, protect, or reconfigure
- Inform security/management of the contractor’s start date
3. Clear the Work Area
- Remove fragile items and valuables
- Empty built-ins (cabinets, shelves)
- Move loose furniture or equipment out of the work zone
4. Lift Booking and Access Card (For Condos & Offices)
- Book the service lift in advance
- Request access cards for contractor use
- Inform neighbours or co-tenants (for dust/noise planning)
5. Coordinate Utility Shut-Offs (If Required)
- Electrical or water isolation for hacking works
- Temporarily shut off gas if demolishing near the kitchen
6. Protection Measures (Discuss with Contractor)
- Lift padding, corner guards, and floor sheets
- Corridor and common area coverage (required by MCST)
- Aircon and appliance shielding if they’ll remain onsite
